Welcome to THE WELL, a dedicated space for holistic wellness designed specifically for the University of New Mexico Department of Surgery. Explore our resources and activities aimed at fostering community and enhancing all aspects of your well-being.
A PLACE TO FIND BALANCE, FIND PASSION, BUILD COMMUNITY
As a surgeon, much like any other person, our well being is a complex tapestry composed of our emotional well-being, physical health, mental health, financial stability, occupational satisfaction, and connection to community. However, as surgeons, our well being has profound effects on our careers and ability to care for our patients. Without it we can easily feel unfulfilled, unmotivated, and burned out.

The goal of THE WELL is to serve as a hub for opportunities and resources to improve our well being, foster a sense of community, and bring our complete selves to care for our patients.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

WELLNESS CHALLENGE
Believe it or not, spring is already here in Albuquerque. Green is returning and trees are blooming in the valley.

The simple act of walking in nature has been shown to reduce stress, improve working memory and cognitive function, reduce mistakes in future tasks, and improve mood.

Your disconnect challenge this month is to walk outside with no electronic devices for 15 minutes every day. No phone, no headphones, no smartwatch. Just you. Focus on your surroundings and clear your mind.

VOLUNTEER ON THE BOSQUE
The stress and strain of a career in surgery mixed with the onslaught of happenings in the world can easily make us feel untethered and disconnected from our community. Finding ways to give back, serve our community, and come together for a common task can be restorative and grounding.

The Yerba Mansa Project meets twice a year to care for and restore one of our most precious resources, The Bosque.

PERMIT YOUSELF TO DISCONNECT

CLEAR YOUR MIND. THE ART OF THE MINI BREAK.

The human ear detects sounds over a broad range of frequencies with different frequencies having different effects on our mood and focus. Brown noise is hearing a combination of all these frequencies at once which is thought to have a calming and clearing effect on the mind.

Follow the link below to my favorite free noise generator site, close your eyes, and just listen for 5 minutes. Explore the site and find your own favorite.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL, PHYSICAL.

I know there are many runners in our department (and no, we are not all as fast as Dr. Moore) and I also know from an EGS bake-off or two that most also enjoy a good coffee and pastry. So why not combine the two with a run/walk club that starts and ends at different local coffee shops and bakeries to put in some extra miles and reach our step goals.

Our first Run Club event will be Sunday, March 30th @ 9 am at Zendo Coffee. Catch us if you can.
